There is a chemical in the brain THIQ, for short, that has been linked to addiction and ADD. Check out resources from Drug addiction centres/sites. It is apparently well known. 85% of ADD/ADHD sufferers who are not being treated appropriately for their symptoms with either the stimulants or ADD-care will abuse or become addicted to illegal or legal drugs such as caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol. The reason is that these drugs will momentarily activate the prefrontal cortex like adderall or ritalin or in the case of alcohol dull the senses enough not to notice the symptoms.

Anyone who has undiagnosed ADD may have lower self-esteem, anxiety and depression. These people may fixate and be attached to drugs and alcohol.
